If You Relate To This, You Have Been Friend-Zoned, My Friend!

Ever wondered how Aman in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai must have felt when the woman of his dreams, Anjali, left him for another guy? No? Of course, you don’t! How could you, when Rahul in the house hogged all the attention of the bride and the baaratis!

Personally, I don’t have anything against Rahul (or the makers of KKHH), but what about people like Aman who deserve true love – but eventually get friend zoned and remain there until they learn to develop a thick skin and let go?

It all begins before college, when life seems to be good. Keeping the innocence intact, you’re keen to create a future which seems to GLOW brightly with a cool degree, lucrative job, and great love life. Been there? Felt that? Wait for it.

The good kid enters college to witness life at its best! Few days in college and you realize ‘good’ is not good enough! It’s rather boring. College should be fun because real life begins at the other side of the college gate- that’s what you hear every other day! You agree completely, but you also have the responsibility to set your future right (remember the glow?)

Studies, events, work, fun; you know how to balance everything as long as you have that one person whom you know will always be by your side.

While you’re sitting in your class, pretending to study, having these thoughts, your special person (let’s call him/her SP) is hanging out with his or her ‘new’ friend, and slowly accepting the idea of good being bad. Because it’s life! You have got to live it- which is why your much-awaited date with them is slowly turning into a thing of the past.

And while your SP is planning to look ravishing on the date night, you are shown the front door with loads of love and wishes for your future. Sometimes, that SP even tells you that it’s time to focus on your respective careers, only to be seen with somebody else a day later.

But they care about you, and don’t want to ruin their friendship with you. Bubbling with emotions, you agree! Of course, you will stay friends. SP is too special to be forgotten just like that!

Well, for sure, there’s a dent in the future glow, but you will be fine. And by that, you mean that your SP will come back to you. You know you love them and will take care of them, and then you see their pictures being uploaded with somebody you don’t know, and there is a major conflict taking place between your heart and mind.

You don’t know what to do in life anymore! But you do know them better than anybody else, and care about them a lot, so it’s time to let it be and wait for the right time to make your move (you don’t have any, bro) which your brain knows isn’t gonna happen!

While SP is having a gala with the ‘the less boring’ guy, you eat alone in a restaurant where a charming dude is getting cozy with a girl. Half an hour later, the same guy catches your attention- this time with another girl.

That’s when you get out of that place and go somewhere solitary to get some peace. You finally accept that your SP isn’t one of the glows in your future.

If the world is going to be rude to you, you’re going to show it who’s the boss! Yes, this is the moment when you decide to kill the good in you and turn into a bad boy! You decide to move on with life, finally!

Friendzoned? What’s that? You buy yourself a burger and a coke and strut your way home.

A puff of fresh breeze caresses your face and life appears to fall in place again. Everything feels good for now. What’s a glow anyway when it comes with a black hole. You’re fine without your SP.

Your mind is set, your goals are clear- you know what this is? This is the smile of victory. And just when you were about to win the race of your new found freedom, your phone rings. You guessed it right!

*SP calling*

One moment you tell yourself to not answer and the very next moment you know you will. And you did it. You know you’re back to square one.

It’s a vicious cycle.

Break it, because you deserve so much better. Think of the victory you had achieved before your phone rang. Return to that moment because you deserve better. Problems can be fixed, but unrequited love…that my friend, is a tragedy. A tragedy you don’t need to be a part of. A tragedy no one needs to be a part of.

Sometimes when you’re in a dark place, you think you’ve been buried. But actually, you have been planted.
