A Guy Builds A New Country Where You’re Allowed To Smoke Marijuana, Pay Taxes Voluntarily!

On the 13th of April, 2015, Vít Jedlička stood on a disputed land, parceled between Croatia and Serbia, on the western bank of River Danube, and proclaimed it as a new country, and himself as the president. That country is known as Liberland, or officially, the Free Republic of Liberland.

The said piece of land between Croatia and Serbia is disputed, but Vit already has over 4,00,000 potential citizens.

Self-proclaimed President Vit has been on numerous diplomatic missions to sympathetic politicians around the world, and has also set up a website for people (who are tired of their own governments) to donate and pledge to move when the country finally forms. However, the Croatian Border Police has sealed off entry to the land.

Vit says that the country will only have five essential laws and the citizens are free to do anything they want – as long as they don’t harm anyone else.

With only five members of his self-formed Government, Vit says that the country will be a tax haven, much like Panama, and will have ultra lax government reforms and laws. People eventually living in Liberland will be able to own guns, smoke marijuana, drive as fast as they want, and pay taxes voluntarily, all allowed as long as they don’t kill another citizen.

Amidst all his charisma and infectious determination, Vit falls short of making actually attractive promises.

His health reforms have taken flak, as he plans to have no health services at all in his country. His sole focus seems to be on being the next tax haven, or “tax heaven” as he likes to call it, after the huge Panama Papers bust. He has already invited potential architects to design a state-of-the-art technological infrastructure.

With a lot of promises in his pocket, it seems this micronation will hardly spread its wings, considering the sole export of the country apart from financial services will be its own local beer.
