Every mark on our body has a story behind it. Some were either born with it or some just got it somehow. But do they define who we are? Maybe not! This 24-year-old Brazilian girl, Mariana Mendes, was born with a huge birthmark on her face, which is quite rare. So rare, that only one in 20, 000 babies is born with it and it is called ‘congenital melanocytic nevus’.
While some called it ugly or strange, Mariana is really proud of it. And, has turned it into a beauty symbol.
The mark is caused by increased amount of pigment in the skin which makes the area look darker.
When Mariana was just five years old, she underwent a laser surgery to reduce the nevus. Her mum feared that Mendes would be bullied or shamed for it.
But the surgery didn’t help and Mariana’s nevus stayed.
Ever since then, she has felt proud of it and sported it as a beauty mark.
“I feel more beautiful and totally different from other people because I have a nevus. There are many people who stare and who don’t like it, but I don’t care. I have been told by a few people that it’s ‘ugly’ or ‘strange’, but it doesn’t bother me. That’s just their opinion and I think it’s beautiful. A lot of people ask me about my birthmark, sometimes they think it’s makeup or a tattoo but I don’t mind and explain it to them. I’m proud of having a nevus, it’s a part of who I am and how I learn to like myself.”
And, has even modelled like a Queen.

She loves the feeling of being different and embraces it as a sign of strength.
