Facebook has been of immense use in today’s world when it comes to connecting with people: birthday notifications, constant memories’ reminders. This is a good strategy, but this has converted Facebook into the world’s biggest virtual graveyard.
That’s right. A research professes that by 2098, Facebook will have more profiles of dead people than living ones.
Hachem Sadikki, a statistician from the University of Massachusetts spilled some beans on this hard-hitting revelation; revealing that the social media site is populated with dead people’s profiles.
Here’s what he said:
Where’s the problem?
1. Facebook doesn’t delete the dead person’s profile. Rather, it memorializes it so that people can leave their memories and thoughts on the deceased’s page (meaning, it’s an active account).
2. The growing number of Facebook’s users.
Although, Facebook asked the users to appoint a ‘Legacy Contact’: a user can appoint a person in their contacts before dying.
The Legacy Contact has the power to update a person’s profile, upload pictures or approve of the new friend requests.
Facebook should come with a strategy to address this issue.
