‘Marks Important’ Engineering Grad Who Scored 54% In 12th Says No Company Wants To Hire Him

While growing up, our parents kept on stressing the importance of our board exam marks. Class 12 marks were of utmost importance as they were to guarantee our entry into a decent college and later help us bag a good job. But later, we heard people say that marks don’t matter and that eventually everything works out for the better.

However, an engineering student took to Reddit under the subreddit r/India to state otherwise. Even though he scored 75% in his engineering exams and 85% in his class-10 exams, he claimed he is falling behind because of his class-12 marks, which is 54%, because of which he isn’t able to sit for job interviews at the moment.

“I have less than 60% in 12th standard. Now no company allows me for even sitting in interview. 12th Grade marks are quite important, unfortunately. Learn from my mistake (sic),” he wrote.

He went on to add that despite having no backlogs while persuing engineering, he wasn’t able to sit for the interviews conducted by companies that came to his college.

“I’m currently in the last year of BTech IT, I’m pursuing my BTech from a third-grade college…my percentage in 12 was 54%. Many companies came to my college, looking for interns, they have eligibility criteria i.e. More than 60% in 10th and 12th grade, and More than 70% in Engineering without any backlogs. I have 85% in my 10th and 75% in engineering. I am not called for interviews because my 12th-grade percentage was 54%. Even if I look for interns on LinkedIn, they wouldn’t interview me if I disclose my 12th-grade percentage. (sic)”

Heartbroken about the incident, he turned to Reddit for advice.

“It’s quite frustrating, Sometimes I feel jealous that my classmates can cry about being rejected in the interview as I’m not even called for one till date,” he wrote.

And people on the social media platform gave him incredibly useful advice. Firstly, people assured him that there are many other companies that would be willing to hire him despite his class 12 marks. Secondly, they asked him to increase his skillset while gathering work experience. This would ensure a way better job in the coming years.

Eventually, everything works out! 🙂
