Ellen DeGeneres, one of America’s top TV show hosts, has been people’s favourite for various reasons. Besides her comedy, she has been a strong voice for the LGBTQ+ community and animal rights and her admirable humanitarian efforts have made her widely loved.
‘The Ellen Show’ has been off the air for the past 3 weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ellen DeGeneres too has subjected herself to self-quarantine. However, snippets of the show shot inside Ellen’s home are being released online.
In a recent video, Ellen DeGeneres joked about quarantine and compared it to being in jail, reports Hindustan Times.
“One thing that I’ve learned from being in quarantine is that people…this is like being in jail. It’s mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay,” said Ellen, laughing at her own joke.
Here’s a look at the video:
According to a report by CNN, her joke faced severe backlash online, after which the video was deleted from her channel. Many called her “insensitive” for comparing quarantine in her 27 million USD (206 Cr INR approx) mansion to jail. Have a look at the reactions here:

Ellen Degeneres really said social distancing is like being in jail when the government is out here sacrificing fast food workers who don’t even have that privilege 🤡 she probably hasn’t even discovered half of the rooms in her $27M mansion… pic.twitter.com/3l19ZI3Y7l

What a great look for Ellen as thousands of people sit in actual jail cells just hoping for the best without soap and basic protections https://t.co/RBytt0Kl4B

People so far from being impacted by the criminal justice system love to use it as free labor and punch lines. Fuck you Ellen. Quarantine isn’t jail. Fame isn’t jail. Jail is jail. https://t.co/sgea84nk0q

@TheEllenShow wow ellen, I'd love to be a "prisoner" in a home like yours with all that space but I guess it would be hard without the hired help around #pooryou #mansionisolation

No @TheEllenShow, being quarantined in your mansion w/ an abundance of food, medication and privilege is NOT like being in jail. Incarcerated people are contracting #COVID19 & some are dying because of lack of access to healthcare, supplies & basic empathy from staff. https://t.co/L1XtJ7dFkZ

"One of the most concentrated coronavirus outbreaks in the world is happening in NYC’s biggest jail complex…The jail’s top doctor called the situation a “public health disaster" ….One inmate said: "A lot of us are going to be going home in body bags." https://t.co/m1adElxfJP https://t.co/DIC6U4AwY8

Except that people in jail can't practice social distancing, don't have enough water or toilet paper and are going to die at exceptional rates from Covid-19. Except for that, Ellen, your quarantine experience is just like being in jail. @TheEllenShow @andylassner https://t.co/CqTis3IsLk

In these trying times, it is important for people, especially those who have a solid fan base, to be more sensitive towards people fighting the pandemic. Several prisons in the U.S have become coronavirus hotspots and inmates are dying because of it.
