Dhoni’s Reason For Not Taking Centre-Stage At Team Celebrations Is Quite A Leadership Lesson

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is nothing short of a legend for fans of Indian cricket. And this isn’t just because of his game, those winning sixes, or his being one of the most successful Indian captains. The calm, collected man that he is underneath all the glory just adds yet another laurel to his already full Captain Cool hat. And here’s a prime example of this!

As you know, Dhoni celebrated his 37th birthday two days ago. amidst much love and cake-smashing with his family and team!

In an interview that he gave on his birthday, Dhoni was asked a question that probably bugs a lot of his fans: During his captaincy, why would Dhoni rarely ever take centre-stage and lift the trophy during the post-match winning celebrations?

Can you spot him, right on the sidelines, while he lets his team bask in all the glory that they all so rightfully share?

Wait till you hear the answer because its’going to make you love the man even more!

“Well, don’t you think, it is unfair that you play a team sport where the captain goes and receives the trophy?”

“It’s like an over exposure. Let’s say that you already have an over exposure of like 15 seconds and after that I don’t really think that you are needed to be there. Of course, we all like the celebration and you want to be part of it. But it’s not like you have to be with the trophy.”

Spoken like the Thala he’s so lovingly called, hasn’t he?

According to Dhoni it’s all about keeping it real simple for the team, and giving every player an equal share of the glory, in true team spirit!

He does get to receive the trophy, and those 15 seconds of fame and glory make him content enough to step back and not ‘cling’ to the trophy like it was his solitary achievement.

“In a team environment, we try to make it as simple as possible. And as I said, 15 seconds of over exposure has already happened, so no point clinging onto the trophy.”

That’s the way, Mahi way!

He has another interesting motivation to not hog the limelight in the celebrations. And of course, when it’s Dhoni, you can expect him to finish with a winner of a quote!

“Also, maybe if you don’t spend enough time with the trophy, you get a chance or you want to win another one so that you get another of those 15 seconds.”

Such a legend, this man! Such a legend <3
