Couple Decided To Get Married In A Ladies Washroom For The Most Endearing Reason

Wedding venues are such a big deal now, aren’t they? Virushka went all the way to Italy to make sure theirs was private, picturesque and perfect. The movie Bride Wars turned two BFFs into warring bridezillas, all over a wedding venue! Clearly, wedding venues say a lot about a couple’s style. So then, I wonder, what does it say about this couple who got married in a bathroom? No, really!

For 26-year-old Brian Schulz and fiancé, 21-year-old Maria Schulz, the county courthouse was going to be it—the venue for their intimate little wedding. But turns out, they had to shift their nuptials to a different room than the judge’s chambers! The ladies loo!

Brian and Maria, from Ocean Township, were ready to be Mr and Mrs Schulz at the Monmouth County Courthouse in New Jersey on January 2nd but due to an unexpected twist, had to say “I do” in the ladies washroom.

But guess what? They didn’t mind at all, which is the sweetest thing because the reason was quite endearing!

As the couple was waiting to be called inside the judge’s chambers, the groom’s mother called him from the ladies restroom to tell him that she was having difficulty breathing.

Talking to the New York Post, Brain, the groom, described his panic when he spoke to his mother.

“She really couldn’t talk at all. I could just tell something was wrong, so I just got up and I ran and started looking for her. She was not looking well. Her face was very pale, and she was profusely sweating.”

While the groom was in the washroom, watching his mother being tended to by officers from the County Sheriff’s department, the soon-to-be-bride, her mother and the groom’s best friend were all wondering where he had run off!

“They started to get a little worried that maybe I got cold feet and ran away!”

The officers attending to the groom’s mother recommended not moving her from the washroom, as she still needed oxygen cylinders to keep breathing normally. And this put the groom in a rather difficult situation—what about the wedding?

Cynthia Scott, the public-information officer for the county sheriff’s office explained the couple’s predicament.

“The couple was clearly upset about the mom and having to postpone their wedding in which they would have to wait another 45 days for a new marriage license to be processed.”

And then, a bolt of inspiration struck one of the cops, Leonard Maxfield, who suggested a rather ingenious idea. Why not get married in the ladies washroom?

All they had to do was convince the presiding judge, Katie Gummer, to agree to this spontaneous change of venue. And as luck would have it, she was all on board! And so, it was amidst tissue paper dispensers and trash cans that the couple said “I do poo!”

Sheriff's Officers Assist Couple with Nuptials in Unusual Wedding Ceremony

Things didn’t go exactly as planned when a couple from Ocean Township recently visited the Monmouth County Courthouse along with their moms to get married. Thanks to the quick thinking of Monmouth County Sheriff’s Officers and a judge willing to change venues from her chambers, Brian and Maria Schulz were able to tie the knot. The planned nuptials took a sudden turn, when unfortunately the groom’s mom had trouble breathing and thought she was having an asthma attack in the courthouse. Sheriff’s Officers assisted in administering oxygen to the mom in the ladies bathroom and called EMTs to take her to the hospital. The couple was clearly upset about the mom and having to postpone their wedding in which they would have to wait another 45 days for a new marriage license to be processed. Since the sheriff’s officers were concerned about the mom and did not want her moving from the ladies room, S/O Leonard Maxfield kicked his thinking into high gear, why not get married in the ladies room? The future Mr. and Mrs. were on board and so was the Hon. Judge Katie Gummer who performed the rather unusual ceremony. We are pleased to report that Mr. and Mrs. Schulz are doing great and so is mom. They were touched that Sheriff’s Officers and the Hon. Judge Gummer went out of the way to make their day memorable and special. #SheriffGolden and the #MCSONJ commend all for a great job in pulling this off and congratulate the newlyweds! Many years of happiness.

Were they a teeny bit disappointed with this new venue? Brain, the happy groom, was not ‘pissed’ at all!

“It really doesn’t bother me at all. It’s not embarrassing. I don’t think it means any less than somebody that got married in a church or on a beach or in Jamaica. It’s something between myself, my wife and God. Those are the three entities that need to be involved, and everything else is second.”

The couple plans to have a traditional reception soon but surely their OG wedding is going to be one they can never flush away from their memories!
