‘Corrective Rape’ – A Sick Way Parents Use To Straighten Their Gay Children In Hyderabad

Homosexuality. One word. Infinite problems. In India as well as in other parts of the world, this issue has been brought up, discussed and debated upon. The results? Nil. The acceptance? Not that concrete. And just when you think that it’s high time to accept them as they are, here comes news from Hyderabad!

In Hyderabad, children who are homosexuals are subjected to ‘corrective rape’ by their parents to cure them of their so-called disease. According to statistics with the Crisis intervention team of LGBT Collective in Telangana, there have been 15 instances of ‘corrective rapes’ that have been reported in the group in the last five years.

 

What is corrective rape?

A corrective rape is the act of forcing people to have sex because they are believed to be homosexuals. This is done because homosexuality is not an accepted norm in the society, so it’s done to teach people the ‘social norms’. In most of these cases, the person who performs this act, is a family member. And because of that, these cases are not brought to notice and often, the victim, in question, has to suffer silently.

Vyjayanti Mogli, a member of Crisis Intervention, says,”We are sure there are many more cases, but they go unreported. Victims find it traumatising to speak of their brothers/ cousins turning rapists and prefer to delete the incident from their memories and cut off ties with their families. Which is why such cases almost never get reported.” Isn’t this shocking?

In South India, this act is performed within the family. The perpetrator is a cousin who rapes a member of his/her clan, with the consent of their parents. The ‘cousin’ is chosen by the family member and this whole thing is viewed as a disciplinary action undertaken by the parents to ‘correct’ their child. By doing so, it is believed that the victim will be cured. In other words, he/she won’t be a homosexual anymore.

Well, this is really shocking! People have done so much to fight this taboo, but this crosses the line for sure.
