Carolina Marin Is Shocked That Sindhu Has Earned More Cash Rewards Than Her After The Olympics

Indian shuttler, P. V. Sindhu created history when she became the first woman to win the country a gleaming silver medal at the Rio Olympics 2016. But God knows, she deserved better! While the coveted piece of metal was only the beginning, Sindhu has out-shadowed every other contemporary and bagged more than just awards for herself including numerous cash prizes from government institutions, amounting to over 13 crores.

And it was only recently when Olympic medalist, Carolina Marin who defeated Sindhu to win gold at Rio, learned about Sindhu’s long list of rewards including state recognitions and luxury cars.

Speaking at an event, a baffled Carolina Marin who had received 94,000 Euros (Rs 70 lakh) for her gold win spoke about Sindhu’s accomplishments and said,

“I heard she got millions. That’s huge. I, too, got some cash award from the Spanish government. I actually roughly received 10-15 % of the money Sindhu got, but this is a great indicator that the sport is so popular here.”

The Spaniard is in India to take part in the ongoing Premier Badminton League and is representing the Hyderabad Hunters at the second season.

Marin, however, parted with her shock and asserted that India as a country is encouraging the development of sport and its sportspersons.

“Back in Spain, it’s only popular in certain regions, even there the craze isn’t this big. So the country (India) is a model of sorts for commercial development of the sport.”

While we have a long way to go, good news is, that the sports scenario in India is shaping up! And we can only hope it continues.
