Recently, the news of IIM Lucknow reaching out to ex-students to help arrange for job opportunities for its students went viral. It highlighted the lack of work opportunities for some of the brightest minds in our country. Incidents like this have made it evident how one of the major crises our country is going through right now is the massive dip in employment opportunities.
After IIM Lucknow, BITS Pilani has reached out to its alumni for the same – supporting the institute in finding suitable work opportunities for its graduates. A picture of the notice was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Ravi Handa.
“In spite of business adversities, BITS Pilani has stood strong, with our closing placement statistics for the academic year 2022-23 standing at a healthy 89.2% for Indian Campuses. Since then, however, the hiring slowdown has only deepened. Although the placement teams are doing their best, they would be very appreciative of support from our esteemed alumni to help them tide through the current crisis,” the notice by BITS Pilani read.
“First IIM Lucknow, now BITS Pilani asking alumni to help out with placements. This is the first time I am seeing such groveling after 2008,” Handa wrote.

Several people raised serious concerns regarding the condition of placement drives in some of the top institutes of the country. However, many thought that it was perfectly fine for institutes to reach out to the alumni and ask for help in such conditions. Here’s how some of them reacted:
A young boy, relative of mine, struggling to get placed after passing out from IIM Rohtak, in 2023. Not placed so far.

I don’t know how to feel about this. Why is reaching out to alums demonized? The current market scenario is in shambles, and we all know that, but, is seeking help due to turbulent market situation that bad? Just trying to understand.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with placement teams reaching out to alumni to get the current batch placed. We all need to try our best.

With AI sword looming over the job market, I think the worse is yet to come. Govts around the world should be prepared for the upcoming unemployment crisis.

If this is the state of the tier 1 colleges, it must be very brutal for tier 2 and tier 3 students.
One of my relatives who is studying Computer Engineering said no company visited to hire in IT. A few companies came to hire Mechanical Engineering students.

The current market scenario is really disturbing, witnessing massive layoffs since start of the year 2024 and it’s not gonna end for coming few months! I think that’s the major reason, why esteemed organisations like IIM and BITS are approaching their alumni to support their…

1. These are the brightest kids- one bad placement season doesn’t take away from their achievements.
2. Some IIMs managed to place the entire batch after reaching out to alumni.
3. Spare a thought for lesser colleges, who may not be able to get their alumni to do this bit.
