It’s going to be a noise and air pollution free Diwali in Delhi NCR this year. All thanks to the Supreme Court which banned the sale of firecrackers just short of the festival. Delhites have been complaining about the air quality for many years.
Last year, the day after Diwali, Delhites complained of almost zero visibility. According to Hindustan Times, the air pollution level in Delhi was between 450 to 500 hundred. Air pollution is classified as ‘severe’ if it’s between 400 to 500.
It was difficult to see even the tallest skyscrapers so imagine breathing that air!
Chetan Bhagat, famous for his Twitter rants (but more famous for being trolled in hilarious ways) starts his latest Twitter battle about the ban on firecrackers in Delhi.
SC bans fireworks on Diwali? A full ban? What’s Diwali for children without crackers?
— Chetan Bhagat (@chetan_bhagat) October 9, 2017
Can I just ask on cracker ban. Why only guts to do this for Hindu festivals? Banning goat sacrifice and Muharram bloodshed soon too?
— Chetan Bhagat (@chetan_bhagat) October 9, 2017
Banning crackers on Diwali is like banning Christmas trees on Christmas and goats on Bakr-Eid. Regulate. Don’t ban. Respect traditions.

आज अपने ही देश में, उन्होंने बच्चों के हाथ से फुलझड़ी भी छीन ली। हैपी दिवाली मेरे दोस्त।

Twitterati obviously didn’t take it lying down and showed him how important it is to curtail air pollution as much as we can. He replied to them, defending his stance.
1. His rant lead to this lady and him battling it out.

Diwali one day a year is causing disorders? Or unchecked polluters who pollute everyday? https://t.co/zbv4wMqDje
— Chetan Bhagat (@chetan_bhagat) October 9, 2017
2. And it continues…..

3. He got down to bringing a communal debate again.
I want to see people who fight to remove crackers for Diwali show the same passion in reforming other festivals full of blood and gore.
— Chetan Bhagat (@chetan_bhagat) October 9, 2017
4. Isn’t all pollution bad? Firecrackers and cars.
If you care turn off electricity in your house for a week and don’t use cars. On what basis are you imposing a ban on someone’s traditions?
— Chetan Bhagat (@chetan_bhagat) October 9, 2017
5. The festival of light was defended by this lady and he got into a spat with her as well.
False equivalence. Bursting crackers has nothing to do with the Diwali tradition. The very word 'Diwali' means 'light'. Lighting diyas=Diwali https://t.co/Lmsu45fAXV

So you are going to decide for everyone? Ban whatever doesn’t suit your style? https://t.co/1aUPOrC9wa

6. Chetan Bhagat also indulged in a Twitter war with Shehzad Poonawalla, Secretary of Maharashtra Congress.

Be careful in your choice of words. That’s all I would say https://t.co/8ANlHZlkH8

7. The tiff continued.

When they can’t logically argue with you. They resort to personal attacks. Usually means you have won. Stay positive. Always. https://t.co/F5NwmgYREz

8. Even Shashi Tharoor got in the midst of the battle.
Your examples of practices integral to those observances; banning them would be like banning lamps onDiwali. Firecrackers are unholy add-ons

9. Is this about religion or breathable air for all?
Diwali is 1 day, 0.27% of year. pollution comes from 99.6% days of poor planning and regulation. Fix that. Not make 1 religion feel guilty.
— Chetan Bhagat (@chetan_bhagat) October 9, 2017
10. News 18 had a debate on his Twitter war and this is what he had to say.

Stand up for your festival and religion, and this is what you get tagged. Well done guys. https://t.co/G6T3rZfPVu

11. This user had something else to add.
You'll have all the celebrities on your back!!!
— Zain (@Zain1702) October 9, 2017
Coz a lot of people love to virtue signal on twitter, don’t know diff between one day and a whole year or how pollution is caused. https://t.co/xhZnVOovHR
— Chetan Bhagat (@chetan_bhagat) October 9, 2017
Twitterati is trolling him and here are some of them
1. A valid point!
Noise pollution, air pollution must be stopped whichever religion it applies to, without discrimination & bias.
— Siraj Attari (@sirajmattari) October 9, 2017
2. LOL!
https://twitter.com/AamAadmi69/status/917287327516393472
3. It’s a serious issue.
You are right, but see last year Govt had to declare emergency, schools-offices were shut down. It's extremely toxic condition. pic.twitter.com/wYmy5QtzSV
— Dharmesh Dixit (@theDDixit) October 9, 2017
4. Communal insecurities seem very prevalent in our country.
Lord knows where I want to shove a bunch of crackers this Diwali. And by Lord I mean Jesus. https://t.co/TCEemkPZfk
— radhika vaz (@radvaz) October 9, 2017
5. Absolutely!
The one day matters too. If one day I can breathe better, why not. Also yes innovate, control all pollution.
— KC (@WriteNBeyond) October 9, 2017
Chetan Bhagat then replied to the trolls.
I have a right to have my opinions. If all you can do is give hate, threats and personal attacks in response, reflects more on u.
— Chetan Bhagat (@chetan_bhagat) October 9, 2017
Well, this shows how insecure we are about our religions in this country. We somehow make every debate about a Hindu-Muslim rivalry. Air pollution on Diwali leads to exceeding of all levels of breathable in Delhi and no one should consume that toxic air. Let’s make the festival of lights what it really is- Deepawali and light diyas and celebrate the homecoming of Ramji peacefully.
