Bengaluru Woman Orders ‘2 Free Thalis’ Meal On Facebook, Ends Up Losing ₹50,000

While smartphones enable quick financial transactions, there are a lot of risks and frauds involved if one doesn’t pay heed to online banking literacy. For instance, a Mumbai woman got scammed of Rs. 7 lakh after sharing her bank OTP number 28 times with a fraudster.

Recently, a 58-year-old woman named Savita Sharma, who is a resident of Yelachenahalli in South Bangalore fell prey to an unfortunate cybercrime and lost Rs. 50,000 while ordering food online. It all started when she came across an advertisement on Facebook of a restaurant in Sadashivanagar. The meal offer was of  2 free thalis for buying 1 thali priced at Rs. 250, reports The Indian Express.

As per a report in News18, she called up the number on the advertisement to place an order. The person on the other side said that she has to pay an advance of Rs. 10 to book the order, while the rest of the payment could be done in cash to the delivery person.

The fraudster sent a link on her mobile phone to fill up a form, in which she ended up sharing her debit card details and PIN number. Within the next few minutes, Rs 49,996 were withdrawn from her account, as per the police sources.

Upon receiving the message of deduction from her account on her cellphone, she tried calling the restaurant number on the advertisement, but it was switched off. She finally filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Economic Offences & Narcotics (CEN) police station the next day. The police are currently investigating the case.
