Assamese News Channel Labels Girls Wearing Shorts As Indecent & Damaging To Our Culture

In recent times, people have complained that the quality of reporting on news channels have gone downhill and here is one more example that validates their point.

Assamese media dropped to an all-time low when a local news channel, Protidin Time, ran a sick and absurd video titled ‘Fashion means Expose’ of how young girls in Guwahati, dressed in shorts, are apparently creating a ‘menace’ on the streets.

The news channel shot & labelled random girls on the streets as indecent and then went on to compare them with monkeys. After the video sparked outrage, Protidin Time removed the video from YouTube but it was later uploaded by Policy Samvad.

Here’s the full transcript of the video:

News anchor says:
For hunger there’s food; for sunlight, rain & danger there’s home; and there are clothes against shame.Today’s topic of the day is clothes and dressing. After watching this news, probably some of you will burn with anger. But those who understand and agree with the gravity of this topic.

Video voiceover says:
Even monkeys from the jungle have started wearing clothes. Even monkeys have learnt to wash clothes. But the need for clothing has diminished in our civilized society. This is a scene from your favourite city, Guwahati. Now-a-days, the choice of apparel for many young girls in Guwahati are shorts; the choice is ‘half-pant’. And the size of these clothes have decreased. Maybe for these girls, “Fashion means Expose”. By the way, these girls claim that the choice of clothes is their personal right, and shorts are comfortable to wear.

Girl in blue says, “It’s a bad mentality. Everyone should wear what they are comfortable in. They can wear it because it’s fashionable too. That’s a personal choice.”

Girl in red say, “If someone is going to the nearby market, there’s no qualm in wearing shorts.”

Video voiceover says:
But is comfort necessary for only 5 out of 100 girls. And under the pretext of fashion and comfort, people lay their eyes on such clothing.*Random Assamese song plays in the background that teases girls wearing short clothes*Shorts aka ‘half-pant’ wearing young girls. Even if it sounds bad, nevertheless, it’s true that such clothes titillate the city roads.

Guy in blue says, “Whatever culture we had in Assam, I’ve noticed that that’s nowhere to be found these days. They point fingers at us, males, claiming that we stare, lech etc. Just now I saw a girl going down the streets, the kind of dress she was wearing, what should I say? Whatever culture we had, whatever we are supposed to wear; we need to keep our hair graciously & beautiful & wear  decent clothes, that culture is not anymore.”

Video voiceover says:
In Guwahati, now it’s easily to spot such girls.

News reporter says:
We’ve reached the Mars from Earth. But at the same time, in Assam we’re still discussing clothing. This is unacceptable.

Zublee, a famous Assamese singer speaks about the recent incident where she wasn’t allowed to sing onstage as she wasn’t wearing a traditional attire during Bihu function. She says:
“Committee members told me that I won’t be allowed on stage if I don’t wear Mekhela Sador”

Video voiceover says:
Yes, in a state where an artiste can’t get on stage without wearing traditional clothes, what’s the big deal if a news channel is still discussing clothing? And these girls should always remember one thing: Culture is not protected on stage; the stage for culture is the society.

With cameraman Bipul Mazumdar, this is Hemen Rajbongshi.

The irony of the video lies in the fact that the Assamese society (and people of Northeast, in general) are forward thinkers and has a much broader mindset than depicted by this mockery of a news reporting.

This highly ridiculous video only goes on to show how this relatively new TV channel is trying to gain some eyeballs by imposing their stinking mentality on viewers. Trying too hard, maybe?

Here’s a piece of advice to Protodin Time: “My dressing sense is not cheap, your mentality is.”
