IPS Officer Archana Ramasundaram To Be The First Woman To Head Indian Paramilitary Forces

Women have been making their mark globally. Be it any field, they are proving time and again that they are no less. And the start of February marked another milestone.

Archana Ramasundaram, a senior IPS Officer, was appointed Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) by the government. She became the first woman to head a paramilitary force.

Archana Ramasundram, who is a 1980-batch Tamil Nadu cadre IPS officer, is the first to be posted to head a border guarding force (SSB). According to the order issued by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), she will serve this post till the date of her superannuation: September 30, 2017.

The SSB is deployed to guard the country’s frontiers with Nepal and Bhutan.

Currently, she is the director of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

The IPS Officer has also been in the news in the year 2014 when her appointment as the additional director in the CBI was challenged in the Supreme Court.

After which, she was moved to NCRB as its chief.

Other than her, the IPS Officers K Durga Prasad and K K Sharma have also been appointed as Director Generals of CRPF and BSF, respectively.

And they’ll take over this position after the current chiefs of these forces retire at the end of this month.

Including SSB, there are five paramilitary forces in India.

Ministry Of Human Affairs adopted a uniform nomenclature of Central Armed Police Forces (formerly known as Paramilitary forces) in March 2011, which includes – SSB, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

That’s really empowering!

Kudos to Archana Ramasundaram and may she continue to inspire women with her achievements. 🙂
