Amazon Employee Chooses Stability Over Office, Leaves Job & ₹1.6 Crore Worth Stocks

It was during the time of the pandemic that the world was introduced to the concept of ‘work from home’ and people really embraced it. As some of the top companies of the world were asking employees to work from home, people realised that it is a lot more productive and gives one the freedom to work from anywhere.

However, as the pandemic subsided and things started to come back to normal, companies were asking employees to return to the office. One such employee works for Amazon (identity not revealed) who shared their story of what happened next.

According to Indian Express, the employee claimed that Amazon had made them a promise to allow them to work from anywhere they liked. But in May, they were asked to return to the office.

“We were informed in May that we would be required to return to the office three days a week beginning in June from Seattle,” the employee said.

This caused them a lot of distress because they had just bought a house in a remote location to be able to live their dream life.

“I was devastated. I had just bought a house in a remote location and was finally able to live the life I had always dreamed of. I couldn’t believe that Amazon was going to take that away from me.”

On the other hand, Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser said that working from the office leads to long-term results for the customers, business and culture.

“We’ve repeatedly made our position clear: In February, we shared with employees that we’d be asking them to start coming into the office three or more days per week beginning in May because we believe it would yield the best long-term results for our customers, business, and culture,” he said.

As a result, the employee chose to leave his job and also give up $203,000 (Rs1,69,01,476) worth of stock and chose his freedom and stability instead.

Would you do the same if you were in the employee’s position?
