Many people believe that we should ‘never meet our heroes in real life‘. And this is because ‘they’re sure to disappoint us‘. But no one said anything about sending them handwritten letters right? So that is exactly what a budding entrepreneur did.
10-year-old Alex Jacquot sent a letter to the CEO of Qantas Airways, Alan Joyce. Alex wants to start his own airline by the name of Oceania Express and he sought some tips from someone in the industry.
Our competitors don't normally ask us for advice, but when an airline leader reached out, we couldn't ignore it.
Naturally, there was only one way to respond: CEO to CEO. pic.twitter.com/JTFpzn5a6Y— Qantas (@Qantas) March 11, 2019
In his letter, Alex earnestly told the CEO about his airline startup and also asked for clarification on 3 issues he’s been grappling with. Take a look.
The 3 issues as outlined in the letter were – what can Alex do to utilize his school holidays in a way that is beneficial to his startup, tips on managing an airline and how to ensure passengers get good sleep on long-haul flights.
And he received a reply! In addition to answering his queries, the Qantas CEO invited Alex to a one-on-one meeting and a tour of the company’s Operations Centre. How cool is that?
When Qantas shared the letter on Twitter, people lauded the fact that a corporate big-wig gave so much time and consideration to a young business enthusiast. Everyone loved the encouragement he was shown and hoped that Oceania Express soon becomes a reality.
This is so beautiful and heartwarming. Thank you 🙏 to @Qantas CEO for taking the time and reply to the young man and treat him with respect. We all are fulfilling our childhood dreams in what we do for a living.

Seeing it posted on social media does make this more of a marketing exercise, but can’t fault it if the end result is inspiring entrepreneurs of any age. Well done Qantas.

We sincerely hope that Alex enjoys meeting his hero apart from gaining knowledge from his experience. And we wish him the best of luck with his airline venture.
