On 2nd June, all of us came across a heartbreaking message. And it was the captain of the men’s Indian Football team, Sunil Chhetri urging everyone to come to the stands for their match against Kenya. He said he was okay if football fans wanted to abuse them because Indian football isn’t good enough, but he asked them to do so from the stands. And on that note he ended his video.
48 hours later when Sunil Chhetri walked onto the field for his 100th match, he saw that the entire stadium was packed. As promised, Chhetri and his lads put on a magnificent show, with Chhetri scoring twice and Jeje Lalpekhlua netting one as well. While the cheers during the match was loud as hell, it was almost deafening when the final whistle indicated India’s victory. And Indian football was reborn.
While those in the stands vocally appreciated Sunil Chhetri’s efforts, desi Twitter did the same via their social media handles.

Sunil Chhetri has broken a lot of records on the football pitch throughout his career but he's done the impossible today, by getting that many Mumbaikars to come to Andheri West on a rainy Monday evening.

Sunil Chhetri was overjoyed after the immense response he received in the stadium and on social media. So, he thanked everyone for their support.
We promise you that if that’s the kind of support we get every time we play for the country, we will give our lives on the pitch. India, this night was special because we were in this together. Those in the stands shouting, and the ones at home cheering – thank you!
— Sunil Chhetri (@chetrisunil11) June 4, 2018
We always keep complaining about the negativity in social media. However, that packed stadium and these responses are proof that wherever there’s darkness, there’ll be light. And since Sunil’s message has brought everyone’s attention back to Indian football again, we should make sure that this continues for generations to come so that they can keep winning matches.
