Women who suffer due to triple talaq know how traumatic it is. And for those of us who hear about it know how illogical it sounds. Divorcing your wife simply by saying “I divorce you” thrice is not only insensitive but it is highly irrational too!
Under Islamic law, once a marriage is consummated, a wife cannot divorce the husband without his permission. But a husband can do so anytime he likes. This practice is very controversial and Muslim women are demanding that triple talaq be made illegal in India.
After having read several reports of husbands divorcing their wives on WhatsApp, there is another such news. This time, a Saudi Arabia-based banker, Mohd Mushtaquddin has divorced his Hyderabadi wife by giving an advertisement in a newspaper!
The wife who lives in Hyderabad has a 10-month-old baby. She has filed a complaint against the husband and the police have charged him with cheating and cruelty.
The woman came to know about her divorce from a newspaper Ad. I mean how cruel and bizarre is that? Â The husband’s lawyer called her after she had seen the advertisement.
The couple got married in 2015 and moved to Saudi Arabia where Mushtaquddin worked. They came back to India 2 months ago and the wife moved back to her parents home after the couple had a fight. He returned to Saudi without a word and the wife said,
The police officer S Gangadhar said that Mushtaquddin had harassed his wife for a dowry of ₹20 lakh. He said,
“We are conducting a probe and also verifying if a divorce announced through a newspaper is valid under the Sharia.”
With such gross misuse of triple talaq, it is for sure that this barbaric practice should be abolished. FYI, our neighbour Pakistan has done away with the practice in 1956 itself! Bangladesh, Iraq, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Egypt are other examples of Muslim countries where triple talaq has been banned.
I hope we come up with progressive legislation to redress the pain of our Muslim sisters. Men cannot just be coward and shed all their responsibilities by saying talaq thrice!
