Indian Army Gets Over 2 Lakh Female Applicants For 100 Jawan Posts In Military Corps!

It’s good to see our country opening new avenues for women in areas which were once considered strictly male-dominated. Back in April, we celebrated after the Indian Army made way for women to be recruited as jawans in the military corps for combat roles and began their online registration process.

And now, a little more than 2 months later, more than 2 lakh female applicants have applied for 100 vacancies as jawans in the Corps of Military Police (CMP).

According to sources, the army is currently planning to raise a ‘Mahila Provost Unit’ in the Territorial Army for the first time comprising of 2 officers, 3 junior commissioned officers and 40 soldiers.

Till now they were only inducted as officers and posted in select areas such as medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering wings of the Army.

“Recruitment of women as soldiers (general duty) in the CMP is a path-breaking step. With over 2 lakh women registering online since April 25, the recruitment rally is now slated to be held at Belgaum before this month-end. With 100 of them being inducted every year, women will eventually comprise of 20% of the CMP. The functional efficiency of the first female provost unit in the Territorial Army will decide whether more such units should be raised”, said a senior officer.

Once recruited, the women soldiers will be trained at the CMP centre in Bengaluru in areas including crowd control, frisking of female protestors in military hit areas, investigation of criminal cases like rape and molestation, and preserving order and discipline in military formations.

“Combat roles also need to be opened up for those women who want to opt for them. Many countries do not have a combat-exclusion policy for women who are willing to bite the bullet”, said a female officer.

This is a major step ahead for women in the military!
