The kind of street food that is available now is very different from the kinds that we used to eat in our childhood. Nowadays, vendors add cheese, mayonnaise, and Chinese sauces to almost everything, ruining the original taste of things. For example, momos are supposed to be had with chilli oil/sauce. But vendors are adding mayonnaise on the side. The same with kathi rolls, where grated cheese is being added.
A guy on Twitter, Balsher Singh Sidhu, expressed that the Indian street food scene is being completely ruined due to the addition of mayonnaise and grated cheese.
(Unpopular?) opinion: Indian street food scene is being ruined by excessive mayo and shredded cheese. They just destroy the actual flavours. Indian food is good enough already without being drowned in mayo/cheese.

And an overwhelming number of people thought so too! Panipuri, papri chaat, Maggi, pakodas, vada pav, etc. – all these things nowadays come with a side of mayo or are topped with cheese. Some also blamed food vloggers for promoting this kind of food trend.
Nope. Cheese Panipuri has arrived.

50 years from now i think high sugar and high fat items will be considered as sin good as tobacco is today. Health issues are spreading at alarming rate

Well said. In fact I’m seeing Mayo being offered with momos/dimsums too these days. It’s blasphemous.
PS- The tweet is not for you Jemin, since veg momos are not momos 😉

Definitely not an unpopular opinion and you forgot to add schezwan sauce to the list of so called fusion dishes…
— Priti Gaikwad (@pritscribe) August 16, 2022
NOT unpopular by a mile. I HATE when someone drops even a pinch of either of those things; totally ruins the original stuff.
— Political Rambo (@PoliticalJunk20) August 16, 2022
And the major credit goes to those good for nothing food vloggers ! Who continue to urge the vendors to come up with such Ludacris ideas !
— Dhumketu (@dhumketu101) August 16, 2022
Such ingredients don’t just ruin the original taste of the street food dish but make it multiple folds unhealthy. Our chutneys and achaars are much better condiments.
This is a popular opinion! We have all these great ingredients and great flavors (which the whites are adopting) while we are over indulging in fats (mayo is eggs and oil while processed cheese is pretty much mostly fat). I hope this trend dies.

Its a fact, most indian foods spoiled by ready/ easy to mae items amd its alarming that junta likes itband thriving, Chinese, mayo and what not ! Cringeworthy, this ia a scene across india i guess
— JD (Jayaram) (@Jayaram18908239) August 16, 2022
that’s not even real cheese or mayo .. that’s even worse now.. the cheese these vendors use is made of all purpose flour and mayo too! It’s so bad for your health.. the ketchup they put is also made from flour, red coloring, industrial syrup and vinegar and ripe pumpkin pulps.
— matin🇵🇸 (@invadetheskyy) August 17, 2022
Mayo is tasteless, I don’t know how it can replace the wonderful variety of chutneys we already have. My heart sinks a little every time I see people eat momos with mayo.
— manish (@ThatGuyManish) August 17, 2022
Now a days even if i am ordeiy Vada pav, I have to ask..kya kya daloge??? Or i wait and see what the vendor is doing to others and then decide if i want to order.. be it dosa or sandwich…

I dont like how americanized our food palates have become. Mayo doesnt taste good and cheese is meh. It doesn’t triumph over the spices used in indian cuisine 😕
— Chronic Migraines has taken Nour (@ohmyhoven) August 16, 2022
Not “Unpopular” at all
The basic rule today to make street food seem fancy today is to add loads of butter, cheese, mayo or take any Indian dish & create a Chinese fusion, spcly Schezwan— megha sharma (@VoiceofMegha) August 16, 2022
I just can’t understand the fascination with Mayo in this country. I think it’s the burger joints that got them hooked. Everything that goes onto a Burger and Pizza must go onto everything Indian is the new “Great Indian Recipe” trend.

It’s certainly not an unpopular opinion- the real talent of cooking is being killed thanks to ready available Mayo/Cheese. The prep of raw material ingredients condiments was the essence of a particular food. All these frozen food, garnish with mayo/cheese has killed it.

I think it’s time we take a few steps back a little and make our original desi flavours great again!
