It has been widely discussed that the sources of energy that we depend on right now, will be depleted in the next 100 years. And although it seems like a long time from now, that deadline begs us to come with alternatives so that humanity can exist forever.
Now, there have been some large-scale moves to turn to renewable sources of energy like solar, wind or hydro energy. But this change needs to take place on the ground-level as well. And one Bengaluru woman is a prime example of that revolution.
Selvamma, a 75-YO woman in Bengaluru, has caught everyone’s attention by selling grilled corn using solar energy. She said,
Bengaluru: 75-year-old Selvamma who has been selling corn outside Vidhana Soudha building for over 20 years & used to constantly fan the coal to roast corn, now uses portable, solar-powered equipment provided to her by SELCO Foundation. #Karnataka pic.twitter.com/YB1p7rR4m2

“I live in a nearby NGO. It was earlier a challenge for me to roast corn. After seeing my struggle, these people provided me with this machine.”
Using a renewable source of energy to fan coal (which is a non-renewable source of energy) is counter-productive. But at least she’s showing that solar power is usable in the city.

Netizens lauded that even at her age, she’s adapting to new techniques, which is in turn helping the environment.
Brilliant – probably increases her productivity and serves as an attraction/conversation starter. The panel & battery will pay for itself! Looks like a neatly put together product. https://t.co/Cv3Mwg7dsk

In Bengaluru, we do it with sweg.
Super proud of Selvamma. More people need to hear about this! https://t.co/So9sjqVJbr

This is not the first time a corn-seller in Bengaluru has come up with a way to work smart instead of working hard. Mr. Madeshwaran had created a makeshift fan (made from plates) and light for his shop.
As a country, we should be doing what Selvamma’s doing on a small scale. And maybe it’ll cut down on our record-breaking pollution levels and give the whole world a new benchmark to strive for.
