“This Is Not About Sonam And Me,” Abhay Deol Clears Air About His Fairness Cream Post.

We have all read the recent facebook post in which Abhay Deol took a dig at Bollywood stars for endorsing fairness creams. His frustration could be seen in his choice of words and we are nothing but proud of his rational stand.

In retaliation to his post, Sonam Kapoor posted a picture of Esha Deol (Abhay’s cousin) endorsing a fairness cream. Abhay stood his ground and criticised his cousin too!

In a recent interview, Abhay makes it clear that the focal point of his post was the wrong ideas attached to the concept of fairness and not the celebrities who endorsed the product.

“Honestly I didn’t care what people from the fraternity think because this is not about me or them. I have nothing personal against them. I put up the post because I was tired of celebrities and brands telling me that they are simply propagating a regressive message which has existed in our society for hundreds of years.

The frustration comes from the fact that by cashing in on it we’re only perpetuating it further. So, since this is not about Sonam and me, let’s stick to the issue at hand, shall we?”

A logical Abhay talks about why many celebrities don’t speak up about these issues. The focus shifts from the discussion of the problem to the celebrity instead!

“I have my faults too; I’m not holier than thou. I only wish to stop reinforcing a myth so we can deal with the real problem. Some people will take offence to everything. That’s okay, we need people like that so we can know what not to do.”

He also recalled his experiences growing up as a fair Punjabi child and the false notion that was instilled in him that being fair equalled to success!

Hai kitna gora hai, his cheeks are so red. The ads reiterating that fair-skinned people became successful confirmed the notion.

It was only when I went to Los Angeles for further studies and befriended many browns and blacks who were proud of their complexion that I realised how wrong the conditioning had been.”

Abhay Deol is certainly striking all the right chords. We need to shed these illogical beliefs that have been ingrained in our minds in order to be called a progressive species!
