It’s every desi mom’s dream – her child will one day fly off to a fancy university abroad, maybe Stanford or Harvard, graduate with flying colours, and return as a “bara admi”, making her the proudest mom on the block. So, when Kaivalya Vohra, a promising Stanford student, decided to drop out and build a grocery delivery startup (Zepto) with his friend Aadit Palicha, you can imagine what his mom felt. Spoiler alert: she blamed the friend.
Speaking at the NDTV World Summit, 22-year-old Aadit Palicha opened up about what went behind the creation of Zepto. Apparently, when Kaivalya made the big decision to drop out of Stanford and fully commit to building Zepto, Palicha said Kaivalya’s mom burst into tears and wailed, “What have you done to my son? You’ve brainwashed him!”
And honestly, Kaivalya’s mom is every desi mom ever! This is every desi mom’s classic response when her child goes off the beaten path!
Even now, while Zepto is a $5 billion success, Kaivalya’s mom sometimes laments, “What a beautiful life you’ve given up!” because, in her heart, there was nothing more beautiful than the idea of her son getting that Stanford degree and living the classic NRI dream.
Desi moms, they love you to bits, but they also love their version of your future a little more! 😛
