Name a classical left hander who can leave you awestruck with his majestic stroke play.
No, not Sourav Ganguly.
He can also prove to be the pick of the bowlers on any given day.
No, not Sanath Jayasuriya.
An agile fielder as well.
Yes, you are right.
Yuvraj Singh.
The man who revolutionized the Indian fielding standards. The man who once lit Durban with six sixes in an over. The hero of the 2007 and 2011 World Cup triumphs of India. The man from Punjab who played the 2011 CWC through lung pain along with nausea and frequent vomiting because giving up was never in his blood.
He turns 34 today and although the last 24 months have witnessed an apparent dip in his form and fitness, Yuvraj Singh is nothing short of a hero because he proved us one thing – no matter how hard it gets, never leave the battlefield.
So here’s the story of the man we love, the man we call Yuvi.
As a kid, Yuvraj Singh was very fond of roller-skating and he even won the National U-14 Roller Skating Championship.
But his ‘angry Indian father’ threw away the medal and told him to focus on cricket.
While playing for Punjab under-19 against Bihar under-19, Yuvraj smashed 358 off 404 balls.
In the 2000 Under-19 World Cup, he was named Man of The Series after a few match-winning knocks.
Soon he announced his arrival in international cricket with a match-winning 84 off 80 balls in his debut innings against Australia in the ICC Knockout Trophy.
Who can forget Yuvraj’s match-winning partnership with Mohammad Kaif in the Natwest Series final at Lords in 2002?
I bet, Sourav Ganguly can’t. 😛
Scored a crucial 50 against Pakistan to defeat them in the 2003 World Cup.
And, his maiden century against Australia at Sydney when he scored 139 runs.
6,6,6,6,6 and 6. Remember those six classic cricket book shots?
The Man of the Tournament in the inaugural ICC World T20 in 2007.
And the Man of the Tournament in the 2011 Cricket World Cup after he scored 461 runs and picked up 15 wickets.
Sadly, a tumor developed in his left lung and when it was diagnosed as a malignant growth, he flew to the US for treatment.
He refused to accept that his career had hurtled towards a premature end.
After a gruelling 2-month period of chemotherapy, Yuvraj’s health gradually began to improve.
Unfortunately, he has found himself left out of the team.
Whatever it is, his contribution in spite of having cancer was inspiring.
The tears in his eyes were heartwarming.
Yuvi sacrificed a lot, developed himself as an all rounder so that the team can play 7 batsman.
Became a front line, wicket taking bowler.
And changed the mentality of Indians towards the fielding department.
We used to leak at least 30-40 runs in every match. Let’s not talk about catching.
But, he taught us catches can win you matches.
With the 2016 ICC World T20 knocking at the door, he could prove everyone wrong again.
And add another chapter to his eventful career.
He made me watch cricket, made me watch him bat. Having fought with cancer then having made his way back to the Indian team is a will power which only a few notable sportsmen have.
You are an inspiration.
Happy Birthday Yuvi. ?
God Bless You. 🙂
