Every statement that starts with “kids nowadays have it easy” is usually scoffed at. However when I say that kids nowadays have it easy when it comes to communicating with each other, it’s a fact, not an opinion. WhatsApp provides text chatting, video calls and voice messages to and from anywhere in the world. And it’s followed closely by Skype and Facebook. In the 90’s we only had Yahoo Messenger.
Many might’ve heard about Yahoo but the name of Yahoo Messenger might be something new. However, for every 80’s and 90’s kid, Yahoo Messenger was everything. It made group chats cool because you could talk to any random person in the world. And while face-recognition emojis are okay, Yahoo Messenger gave us stickers. But why am I talking about all this? Well, because our old friend is taking a permanent retirement.
According to Business Insider India, it was recently announced that Yahoo Messenger will permanently shut down all its operations.
Yahoo Messenger began its journey in 1998 and it practically introduced the concept of “pinging” with Buzz. And who can forget A/S/L (Age, sex and location) every time you would sit down to talk with a random person? However, as Yahoo couldn’t keep up with the times, it has to let go of Messenger.
It’s been a fun ride, but Yahoo Messenger is logging off for the last time.

Although the messaging app is shutting down for good, you’ll be able to download your chat data before it gets erased completely on July 17, 2018. And after that’s done, you can keep supporting Yahoo by moving onto Squirrel, which is an invite-only chatting app right now.
Netizens were obviously shocked to learn about this and they shared their fondness for the app unapologetically.
