‘Go big or go home!’ Probably that’s what these chefs thought of before creating a massive, all edible cake. Scores of bakers and chefs from ‘God’s Own Country’ Kerala, joined hands in a record-breaking attempt to create the ‘world’s longest cake’.

Attempting to break the earlier record of a fruitcake (almost 3.2 kilometres long) made by Chinese bakers in Zixi county, 1500 bakers and chefs spent almost four hours to put together a 6.5 kilometres (four miles) cake using 12,000 kilograms of sugar and flour, reported HT.

Termed as the ‘serpentine dessert’, the vanilla flavoured cake is spread with chocolate ganache and weighs a whopping 27,000 kilograms (59,500 pounds). The four inches (10 centimetres) wide and thick cake was spread over on hundreds of tables at a festival ground and nearby lanes of Kerala’s Thrissur area said an NDTV report.

The marvellous record was broken at an event organised by Bakers Association Kerala (BAKE). Large crowds gathered to witness the record-breaking moments as several chefs donning the traditional white coats and toque blanche caps decked the cake.

The lucky ones who got the opportunity to devour the treat said it was ‘up to the mark’, reported BBC.

“This is an effort to showcase our skills to the world.  We ensured hygiene and taste are up to the mark,” the bakers’ group’s secretary-general, Naushad told ET. And finally, their efforts bears fruit and the cake was rewarded with the Guinness World Record for the ‘longest cake – 5,300 metres (17,388 ft).

Well, India’s obsession with all things ‘big’ made us the world record holders. Congratulations to the hardworking bakers who made this possible.
