Watch These Women From Pune Take Their Husbands’ Names For The Very First Time

Indian-Women-Husbands-Names

In India, patriarchy runs deep in the roots and you know that in certain (read majority) parts, it stills stands on an unshakeable ground. Under the veil of sabhyata and palan followed in some villages still, women can never and also don’t take their husbands’ names. They just refer to them as ‘a ji, sunte ho, suniye’ et al. People don’t even realise that not calling their husbands by their first names is an act of age-old patriarchy. Why can men call their wives by their first names and women cannot do the same to their husbands? This video by VideoVolunteers is dismantling patriarchy by opening up a conversation.

Helmed by Rohini Pawar, a woman rights activist, this movement is a talking point. What happens when women, from Walhe village (Pune), take their husbands’ first names for the first time? Watch and see for yourself.
