West Bengal Woman Sells Her Jewellery & Takes ₹3 Lakh Loan To Feed 400 Stray Dogs

Not just pets, stray animals deserve our love and attention too. And it is heartening to see many people coming forward and taking care of them like family. Like Varghese Oommen from Trivandrum who set up an account on a food delivery app for a stray dog named Shadow so that she never goes hungry. And Chella Phillips from the Bahamas who bought 97 stray dogs home to shelter them from Hurricane Dorian.

45-year-old Nilanjana Biswas from Kalyani, West Bengal, sold jewellery worth Rs.2 lakh and took a bank loan worth Rs.3.3 lakh so that she could feed and provide medical attention to the 400 stray dogs in her locality.

The Times of India quoted her saying,

“I have always loved dogs. I have 13 dogs at home and 12 of them are street dogs. But I realized that I have certain responsibilities towards other dogs in the town too. So, I took up the job to look after them myself.”

The homemaker has a dedicated kitchen and refrigerator to cook and store food for them. She and three of her helpers regularly feed the strays chicken and rice and also get them vaccinated.

“We first place a few plastic utensils along roads. Then, we pour chicken and rice in the utensils and water in separate ones. We clean the area and utensils after feeding the animals.”

She revealed that her husband is against her taking on this responsibility but her kids always encourage her. Since she is diabetic and a heart patient, she also requested municipal authorities to rehabilitate and feed them in her absence.

Thank you, ma’am, for showing us the true meaning of kindness and compassion.
