Wife Sentenced To 25 Years In Jail For Killing Her Husband With Eye Drops

We have seen spouses doing the most bizarre things to teach their better half a lesson. From turning off Wi-Fi after hubby hides in loo watching videos to thrashing husband and his GF after catching them watching a movie together, hell hath no fury as a woman scorned.

However, a woman from South Carolina murdered her husband, who allegedly, used to abuse her. 53-year-old Lana Sue Clayton poisoned her husband’s drink with eye drops with the intention to make him sick and uncomfortable. However, the generous amount of liquid that she used to teach her husband a lesson became the reason for his death.

As reported by NBC News, Lana who is a former ‘Veterans Affairs Department’ nurse was arrested in August 2018 and was originally charged with ‘murder and unlawful malicious tampering of food’ in connection with the death of her husband. She pleaded guilty to ‘voluntary manslaughter’ on Thursday but was sentenced to 25 years in jail after she admitted poisoning her husband 64-year-old husband Steven Clayton with eye drops.

“The coroner found a level of tetrahydrozoline (a decongestant used to relieve redness in the eyes) in his system and that’s when we opened the case because that was very unusual for us,” York County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Trent Faris said.

It was earlier thought that Steven died of natural causes but an autopsy toxicology report showed poisonous levels of tetrahydrozoline, which is reportedly found in eye drops. At the time, the incident was put down as an accident.

A report by HT suggested that she admitted to poisoning her husband but claimed that he had abused her. “I did impulsively put the Visine in Stephen’s drink and I did it with the intent to make him sick and uncomfortable. I was upset about the abuse and just wanted him to leave me alone.”

During her sentencing, Lana said that she got the idea of using the eye drops after watching movies. However, she thought they would cause diarrhoea. “I never thought it would kill him. After finding out the Visine was the cause of death, I attempted to take my life as well. I couldn’t live with the thought that I did such a terrible thing,” Lana said to the court.

However, prosecutors thought otherwise. They claimed that she killed Steven for money. They said, ‘she even threw his cell phone in a lake so he could not call for help and burned his will afterwards.’

Lana Clayton had also reportedly shot her husband in the back of the head with a crossbow in 2016 claiming that it was an accident. According to the attorneys, ‘Lana Clayton was abused as a child, raped on a military base and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder.’

“Of the many homicide cases I’ve handled, this one probably takes the cake as far as being bizarre,” South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Paul Burch said. And we can’t agree with him more. What do you think of the twisted tale? Tell us.
