Mumbai Photographer Wins World’s Most Prestigious BBC Photography Award Beating 50K Entries

Photographers have an unbelievable dedication for capturing the perfect shot. They climb up trees, brave cold weather and even risk getting burnt alive by hot molten lava! However, such dedication to the craft certainly paid off for this photographer from Mumbai.

Nayan Khanolkar, a wildlife photographer from Mumbai, recently won the Wildlife Photographer of The Year Award at a global contest organised by the Natural History Museum, London and BBC Wildlife.

The contest is regarded as the world’s most prestigious photography contest and Nayan won the award after beating 50,000 photo entries!

The winning photograph, ‘Alley Cat’ was taken in the Aarey Milk Colony situated on the fringe of Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai.

The photograph shows a solitary leopard walking down an empty lane at night. It captures the sentiment of the locals who accept the wildlife as a part of their daily life.

Nayan also revealed what he hoped to convey through his winning photograph.

“I wanted to convey that if co-existence with predators is possible in the centre of a metropolis, there is no reason why it shouldn’t be possible anywhere else in the world.”

Nayan had to wait for 4 months to capture his winning photograph!

It is certainly a huge honour for the photographer himself but also an excellent means to show the world the incredible photography talent present in India.

Congratulations, Nayan! 😀
