The following mobile platforms will not be supported:

  • BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10
  • Nokia S40
  • Nokia Symbian S60
  • Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
  • Windows Phone 7.1

Why?

1. Because WhatsApp wants to focus on the mobile platforms that majority of people use. When WhatsApp was launched in 2009, 70% of smartphones used Blackberry’s and Nokia’s operating system.

2. Seven years later, the smartphone scenario is different. Blackberry now owns only 1% of the market.

3. So back then, it made sense that WhatsApp supports almost all mobile operating systems so that it’s accessible to everyone.

4. Also, these aforementioned operating systems are creating a hindrance to the expansion of the app’s features.

The company said it’s a tough decision, but a right one.
