Vijay Varma Recalls Designers Denying To Dress Him Up For His Cannes Debut Back In 2013

Bollywood actor Vijay Varma is known to give his all to the roles that he portrays in his movies. Even though his reel life characters resonate with the common man a lot, in real life he is more vibrant and flamboyant.

Recently, the ‘Gully Boy’ actor made his presence felt at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival red carpet when he came in an all-black fusion Indian attire. However, this is not the first time he walked the carpet of the international film fest.

Back in 2013, he attended the fest for the first time representing his film ‘Monsoon Shootout’.

Varma attending the biggest film festival in the world with his film was itself an achievement. But, he was still not a well-known public figure. Hence, when he reached out to designers and stylists to dress him up for the occasion, they refused saying, ‘Who is Vijay?’.

During an interview with Film Companion, the ‘Dahaad’ actor spoke about his homecoming to the fest after a decade. He also revealed how he managed to dress up for the event without any money.

“When I came here, I bought one jacket from Zara, which I could afford. But for the main event, for two events, they said you have to wear the whole suit. So, I went to people, saying, ‘Can some designer come, can some stylist help me out?’ And they said, ‘Who’s Vijay Varma? We don’t want to dress anybody.'”

Since everyone refused to dress him, his friend gifted him a suit and someone stitched him a tuxedo for the two main events.

“Then, a friend of mine gifted me a Zara suit, which I wore for the morning photo call. And somebody stitched me a tuxedo for the red carpet. That’s how I went. When I saw the pictures, they came out on Getty Images and all these places, which I didn’t have money to buy from and I still don’t have those images.”

When he saw his images from his debut at Cannes, he fell in love with himself and now he thinks that he did look like ‘Marwari Johnny Depp’ back then.

“So, when I looked at those images I was like, ‘I look fine. I have never been dressed like that before. I got enchanted by myself. And now that I’ve revisited that image after 10 years I feel like it does resemble a Marwari Johnny Depp’.”

This year, Varma looked dapper in a black suit by celebrity designer Gaurav Gupta.

After rising to fame from the film ‘Pink’, he acted in many critically-acclaimed films like ‘Gully Boy’, ‘Baaghi’, ‘Darlings’, ‘Mirzapur’, and ‘She’, among others. Well, now everybody knows who Vijay Varma is.
