‘What Message Are We Giving To Society?’ Uttarakhand CM On Women Wearing Ripped Jeans

Never judge a book by its cover, society says. But then it goes on to judge people by their clothes. Women are tagged ‘sanskari’ or a ‘slut’ while men are called ‘macho’ or ‘girly’ based on their outfits. This discriminatory behavior becomes a huge problem when powerful people reiterate the same.

One such example is that of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat who went on record to say that those who wear ripped jeans are setting a “bad example” in society and will one day cause a “societal breakdown”.

According to TOI, the CM said:

“Showing bare knees, wearing ripped denim and looking like rich kids – these are the values being given now. All of this is a mad race of westernisation. While the western world follows us, doing yoga and covering their body properly, we are running towards nudity.”

He also went on to narrate how he met with a woman who runs an NGO. He was shocked to see the woman wearing a pair of ripped jeans. Commenting on her attire, the CM said:

“If this kind of woman goes out in society to meet people and solve their problems, what kind of message are we giving out to society? To our kids?”

“Am I taking my son, showing his knees in tattered jeans? Girls are no less…showing their knees. Is this good?” he further asked.

He said that the “problem” starts at home and that parents set “bad examples” for their kids. He also added that setting such examples also leads to substance abuse.
