Unemployment Reaches A New High As 23 Lakh People Apply For Posts Of 368 Peons In UP

A population of 204.2 million should seem like a small population compared to India’s, right? Except it’s not. Not when that entire population is spread across only 243,286 square Km. And that ladies and gentlemen is the population of the state of Uttar Pradesh.

But Uttar Pradesh has bigger problems than just its population. The recent upsurge in unemployment has brought to light another ugly figure for the already crowded state.

In UP, 23 lakh people have applied against only 368 posts of peon in the state secretariat. That’s one shocking number considering the fact that this number is actually half the population of Lucknow (45 lakhs).

The shock doesn’t end here. Out of these, about 2 lakh applicants are graduates with  BTech, BSc, M.Sc and M.com degrees, and worse, there are 255 P.hD candidates as applicants as well.

Prabhat Mittal, secretary of department of Sachivalaya Administration which would be conducting the appointment, said that he was in a shock to see the response from so many applicants for such few openings, the recruitment of which would be done by direct interviews and which can take a couple of years.

So much for having a degree that will actually be of no use.
