UP Couple Conducts Marathon Puja To Find ‘Hidden Treasure’, Pays 60 Priests In Fake Notes

As exciting it might be to watch conmen on the big screen, it is shocking to see similar cases being played out in real life. Previously, a Delhi guy inspired by the movie ‘Kabir Singh’ posed as a surgeon and duped women for money on dating apps. Another new incident that has resurfaced is very much like a real-life rerun of the film ‘Bunty Aur Babli’.

As per a report in TOI, a  con couple from Uttar Pradesh Geeta Pathak and her husband Gulasi Ram, performed a marathon puja at their ashram called Geeta Niwas in Mathura village of Sitapur, on the pretext of finding a ‘hidden treasure’ on the ashram’s premises. They collected donations from the villagers and called upon a group of 60 priests to perform a relay 14-day puja.

After the rituals were over, Geeta handed a sealed cotton bag to the priests and asked them to open it later. But when the priests opened the bag, they realized they’d been duped by the couple as it contained mostly fake notes. The incident came to notice when one of the priests named Dilip Kumar Pathak approached the police and lodged a formal complaint about the same.

Times Now reports that during the police probe, the cops got to know that this wasn’t the first time this couple was fooling priests and that they had been doing so since 2013 with the help of three other aides. They employed a similar tactic every time and got away as well.

SK Mishra, SHO Rampur Mathura explained, “Geeta’s husband and his aides would invite priests for puja and took donations for local villagers.” They then asked the priests to perform the puja first and then handed fake notes to them as payment. They had previously targeting priests from Gonda and Kushinagar.

Fortunately, the accused couple was nabbed on August 28, 2020 from Sitapur.
