UP Lady Cop Demands Pizza As Bribe For Filing An FIR, Gets Served Suspension Order Instead

As Indians, we all live with an open secret: The knowledge that if you want to get your work in a government office done, you’ve got to grease a few palms. Everyone knows about it; everyone admits that it is illegal. And yet, it is an inescapable reality that one has to face when dealing with bureaucracy.

It’s a bribe all right, but there are several colloquial ways to allude to it: wazan rakhna, hath garam karna and what not! However, this latest case about an unusual bribe demand didn’t involve greasing any palms, but rather greasing a pizza pan!

In a bizarre case, a lady cop in Lucknow, UP, demanded a bribe of pizza and chicken chilly from a restaurant owner who had come in to file an FIR!

No, seriously, not a joke.

Restaurant owner Rohit Beri went to the Hasanganj police station to file an FIR against a man called Shivendra, who had duped him of Rs 7,000. However, sub-inspector Sumitra Devi demanded some free food to register the FIR!

The restaurant owner had no choice but to acquiesce to the cop’s surprising bribe request.

And then, thanks to social media, there was a pizza-sized twist in the tale! The complainant said,

“She asked us to bring food & take our FIR copy. We supplied the order but they returned it and paid us after incident went viral on social media.”

Thank heavens for social media saving the day, right?

The restaurant owner then went on to complain about the SI to the SSP, and an order for the suspension of the cop was issued.

The SSP ordered an investigation, which found Sumitra guilty of seeking the food as bribe, and a suspension was issued right away. As for the FIR that caused all the fiasco, it has been registered and the search for the fraud is on.

While this is indeed a case of series exploitation of power by the police, one can’t help but laugh at the ridiculousness of the bribe demanded! But the again, you cannot underestimate the craving for pizza. No sir! Take it from a pizza lover, it can make you do crazy things!
