Shocking and shameful news about sexual harassment against women come to light almost every single day. But when such crimes are perpetrated by the cops themselves who are bestowed with the responsibility to protect us, it makes me think of the gruesome situation of women’s safety in our country.

On June 22, an inspector from Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district was caught on camera masturbating in front of a woman and her daughter when they came to file a complaint at the police station, according to Times Of India.

According to Outlook, she said, “I ignored his misbehaviour for the first 2-3 times and wanted him to lodge our case in the land dispute. But then one of my relatives had said that she also faced a similar incident at the hands of this officer. This is when I decided to film him.”

The accused cop has been identified as Bhishmpal Singh Yadav, and was suspended on June 26 after his video was forwarded by a local resident and went viral on social media, sparking major outrage in the neighbourhood.

As per India Today, SP Deoria released a statement saying, “An FIR has been registered against him and he has been suspended. Action is being taken.” The inspector has been booked under the charges of voyeurism, which is an unlawful act intended to outrage the modesty of a woman and also of public servant disobeying the law.

The family of the accused has not only condemned this act but also extended an apology to the victims. “Our family is shocked but we condemn my father’s act. We want to apologize to the women who had to face such an obnoxious act. However, we are still not able to understand why he did it. He had been a very humble father of four children, including two daughters and a good cop for the last three decades,” says his son, who is an MBBS graduate as per TOI.

When the police are expected to lead by example, it is horrifying to see such visuals of them becoming lawbreakers. But kudos to his family who has stood up against his wrongdoings. We hope justice is served soon and strict action is taken.
