As beautiful and majestically constructed they might be, hotels always have a mysterious side to them. Maybe this is why some of the most haunted places in the world are hotels. Haunted or not, hotels certainly have mysteries hidden in their chambers. Also, they’re the site of some of the most mysterious disappearances and murders ever. Let’s have a look at some of the most chilling cases of hotel mysteries that are still unsolved:
1. Murder of Corporal Maoma Ridings
When: 1943
Where: Room no. 729, Claypool Hotel, Indiana
The case date backs to 1943, the second World War. Cpl. Maoma Ridings was serving as Corporal in the Women’s Army Corps. She was stationed in Indiana when the unfortunate incident happened. She checked into the Claypool Hotel in Indiana where she reportedly had a date scheduled. On Aug. 28, 1943, her body was found alongside a pool of blood in her hotel room no. 729. She had been badly beaten and slashed. At first, robbery was the presumed motive as only 46 cents were found in her room. But the case took a strange turn when a bellboy claimed to have seen a dark-haired woman, dressed in black inside her room just 3 hours before the body was found. However, the “woman in black” could never be found and the case named as “the WAC murder” still remains unsolved.
2. Disappearance of Elisa Lam
When: February 19th, 2013
Where: Cecil Hotel, Los Angeles, USA
One of the most chilling and perhaps the spookiest case on this list, the disappearance of Elisa Lam is a mystery that is still unsolved. Elisa Lam was a 21 year old Canadian student whose body was found on the top of Cecil hotel in Downtown, Los Angeles on February 19th , 2013 after she had been reported missing from the same hotel at the beginning of the month. The case was widely reported before the body was found as the police released a disturbing CCTV footage from the Elevator security cameras. In this video, Elisa can be seen entering and exiting the elevator and behaving in a strange fashion. She can be seen hiding from something and freaking out about the elevator doors not closing. What is really strange is that the elevator doors start functioning just as she exits the elevator. Her body was found after 15 days of her disappearance when the hotel guests started complaining about a foul smell and taste in the drinking water. The most disturbing aspects of this case are
No drugs or alcohol were found in her system during autopsy though sources claim that it might be due to the large amount of time between her disappearance and being found
How she could access the roof ? as the doors to stairways and roof door are locked and only the staff hotel has the keys and cards to access them
How did she get into the tank? for the people claiming it was a suicide, it’s a big mystery as the water tanks are pretty large and have no fixed access. Hotel staff had to use ladders to access them. Also, the lid of the tank is made of heavy concrete which would be really difficult to replace from inside.
Also, no traces of her were found on the roof when searched by Police dogs.
Her only her phone was missing everything else was accounted for
Her behavior in the elevator footage has also given rise to many theories ranging from paranormal to psychedelic drugs.
Here‘s the disturbing video in case you’re not feeling like sleeping tonight!
