Weapons can make you win or lose a war. We cannot imagine a war without weapons. Over the years various weapons have been used in the wars. While some weapons were common, and others were really twisted.
Here is a list of some of the strangest things that have been used as weapons in a war.
1. Project Bat Bomb
Well, this particular weapon would have made Batman proud. The idea was to capture bats and tie bombs to their bodies. The bats would then be placed in a bat carrier and dropped off from a bomber.
The timer fitted bombs would explode, once the bats were dispersed. Although the idea was quite innovative, yet it did not get past the test runs.
2. Greek War Dogs
Greeks were probably the first people who used dogs as a serious war weapon. Around the seventh century BC, Greeks used to employ trained mastiffs in their army. Often, when an enemy force was coming, they would use these dogs to break their formation. Once the formation was broken it was easy for them to attack their opponents.
3. Hannibal’s Snake missile
Hannibal is often considered as one of the greatest war generals of all time. He was known for his brilliant war strategy. Once when Hannibal’s ships were severely outnumbered, he came up with a unique idea.
Hannibal identified the ship which was carrying the King. When the enemy King’s ship was in range he launched jars full of venomous snakes directly onto that ship.
The snakes frightened him and he immediately turned his ship back.
4. The four-story, 155-foot-long Nazi gun
When it comes to Hitler, there is hardly anything that seems surprising. During the wars, he commissioned the largest gun on Earth.
It weighed 1,350 tons, shot 10,000-pound shells from its mammoth 98-foot barrel. The innovative gun was ultimately a failure as soldiers had a hard time transporting the gun from one place to another.
5. Remote controlled Tank detonators
When we were kids we all used to own those small remote control cars. Well, believe it or not, a similar version of our favorite toy was once used a war weapon. Ironically this weapon was named as Goliath.
The machine was controlled by a joystick and was used to plant bombs under the tanks and vehicles of the Allied forces. Unlike the gun, this weird weapon was actually quite successful.
6. Pigeon Guided missiles
Although it was ultimately scrapped yet a lot of money and resources were invested in this project. The idea to was to launch a missile which would be guided by trained pigeons.
Pigeons were trained in a such a way that they would drop the missile at the exact location. The pigeons were given corns as incentives.
7. Russian tank dogs
The soviet union used these dogs during the second world war. They used to keep these dogs hungry and train them to look for food below the tanks. Bombs were attached to their bodies in such a way that whenever it used to go below the enemy the tanks it used to blast. The bomb used the kill the dogs and also destroy the tank.
8. War Pigs
The technique of using Pigs as a war weapon is actually quite old. It is said that the idea came to Alexander when he was fighting King Porus’ war elephants. There are many accounts in history where incendiary pigs were used against the war elephants.
Pigs used to scare the elephants so much that they used to panic and cause a great damage to their own army.
9. The V3 cannon
Weird weapons and Hitler go hand in hand. The V3 was another weird weapon developed by the Germans during the war. This strange rocket launcher had an unimaginable 418 feet long barrel.
The Germans created this ridiculously long barrel as they thought that it would enable them to launch rockets at a velocity that would reach London even from 100 miles away.
Interestingly, when this weird weapon became operational, the Germans found out that the launcher could not produce enough velocity for the rockets to reach even half that distance.
10. The US Gay Bomb
Believe it or not, the US air force once tried to develop bombs that would control the bad guys without killing them. In order to teach these bad guys a lesson they wanted to create bombs with strong aphrodisiacs, that would apparently cause homosexual behaviour.
As they say, everything is fair in love and war. And as long as a weapon works everything is acceptable in a war.
