Uber has been in the news for quite sometime regarding the safety of women in India. Uber landed into a crisis last year after a male driver employed on its platform allegedly raped a 27-year-old woman in New Delhi.
Uber’s Kolkata driver was caught masturbating while driving a woman passenger. He has been arrested.
The driver was recognized as Pintu Yadav.
What happened exactly?
1. A woman who works in a mall had to board a taxi from Elgin Road to Netaji Nagar in Tollygunj on July 8.
2. The driver, in question, took a longer route instead of a shorter one. When she protested, he started threatening her.
3. During the journey, she noticed that the driver was driving with one hand and masturbating with another.
4. She filed an FIR at the Bhawanipur police station.
Investigation details
1. The police tracked down this driver to his residence. He lives at Kurstia Road in Tiljola (Kolkata)
2. Earlier, he had been booked under Indian Penal Code which was related to criminal intimidation, and molestation.
3. Surprisingly, he had cleared all background check that is one of the utmost priorities that Uber undertakes while hiring a driver.
Uber’s Reaction
According to Ashwin Dias who is a general manager, Uber has immediately sprung to action and it has vowed to help the police with every detail related to Pintu Yadav.
Earlier, with the Delhi incident, the government banned Uber. But banning cab services is not viable. Proper background check and ensuring no leniency during hiring should be Uber’s top goal because that is how people will start relying on their cab service.
