Tripura Govt Removes IAS Officer Who Raided Weddings & Roughed Up Guests Violating Curfew

Late last month, a video from Tripura went viral online showing district magistrate of West Tripura and Collector Shailesh Kumar Yadav raiding weddings that were violating covid curfew. However, the West Tripura DM who was seen enforcing COVID-19 rules has now been removed from his post following his request.

Reports suggest that Shailesh Kumar Yadav penned a letter to Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar on Sunday asking to be released from the charge of DM of West Tripura. This was in the midst of a departmental inquiry that was being conducted against him for his alleged abuse of guests and ‘high-handedness’ during the raid.

Mr. Yadav’s letter reportedly read-

“The Government of Tripura has constituted a high-level Enquiry Committee to enquire into incidents which happened on the night of 26th April 2021 during marriage ceremonies being held in violation of Corona Night Curfew at Manikya Court & Golap Bagan, Agartala. In the interest of an impartial enquiry, I request for relinquishment of my charge as DM & Collector West Tripura District.”

State Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath and cabinet spokesperson confirmed that the chief secretary acknowledged the letter and released Mr. Yadav right away. Furthermore, the director of industries and commerce, Ravel Hamendra Kumar was appointed DM of West Tripura subsequently.
