Due to easy access to internet, people are aware of almost anything, especially international entertainment. That’s why it’s really hard for film-makers to slip any rip-offs or “homages” to far better properties and get away with it. For example, by the time ‘Dhoom 3’ released, people were convinced it was trying way too hard to be ‘Fast and Furious’. And the comparisons to Steven Spielberg’s ‘E.T.’ probably still haunts Hrithik Roshan after making ‘Koi Mil Gaya‘. However, the latest shikaar of such criticisms is Aamir Khan’s ‘Thugs of Hindostan’.
Yash Raj Films recently released the trailer for their magnum-opus, ‘Thugs of Hindustan’. The movie stars Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Katrina Kaif.
The Vijay Krishna Acharya movie is based on an English novel by Philip Meadows Taylor called ‘Confessions of a Thug’. And by the looks of it, the movie has maintained parts of the story and has Bollywood-ised the rest. However, that’s not the problem. The thing that people are worried about is that it looks like a byproduct of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise.
The first trailer boasted of epic ship battles and sassy one-liners from Aamir and Amitabh. But all netizens could see is a poor attempt to be ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.

10. That sounds like the script.
So basically the brief at @yrf must have been: "pirates of the Caribbean, but thoda desi plotline, throw in some colonial struggle, + for good measure some 2nd rate Tom Alter". #thugsofhindostan

Although the trailer looks action packed and the costume design looks amazing, the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ references are extremely apparent. Let’s hope that the story is compelling and dilutes these criticisms after the movie releases.
