For a nation that’s high on taking offense, it’s a little tricky to broach the subject of everything that’s wrong with it. And yet, there are a few who’ve taken up this Herculean task. One of them, is a promising bunch of stand-up comedians from Gujarat, who’ve got a lot to say about India to their fellow Indians.
‘This Is Hindustan’, a video by The Comedy Factory, is a parody of American rapper Childish Gambino’s song, ‘This Is America’.
And just like the OG, this one takes up some rather pressing issues plaguing our country, and puts a catchy tune to it!
A little over a minute and a half, ‘This Is Hindustan’ is a pointed satirical attack on India’s famed hypocrisy.
You know, how we want others to clean up after themselves, but when it comes to managing our own shit, we take offense! From the Padmaavati ban to the frightening rape statistics, from trolls to toilets on railway tracks, from demonetisation to corruption, from politics to poverty to even poo…. nothing is spared!
However, the biggest element of satire is probably the protagonist of the video, who represents the ‘Dharma Chakra’ in the Indian flag. It is supposed to stand for peace and truth… a very scarce sight in our country lately!
The final message is for us, the citizens of this country, to open our eyes and behold the actual problems that need solving, rather than unnecessary issues.
