Texas Waiter Who Accuses Customer Of Saying “We Don’t Tip Terrorist” Now Admits He Was Lying

Right now the internet has become full of viral stories and videos. And considering our necessity to always be on the top of the wave of trends, we tend to react instantaneously. Be it cases of racism, sexism or any kind of oppression, we don’t think twice before outraging. Now, sometimes we should give an incident the necessary exposure. However, going by the fiasco at a Texas restaurant, sometimes it’s really important to look before we leap.

According to The Washington Post, Khalil Cavil, a 20-YO waiter at a Texas restaurant had alleged that one of the customers had written racist remarks on the receipt. He had said,

“I share this because I want people to understand that this racism, and this hatred still exists. Although, this is nothing new, it is still something that will test your faith.”

Cavil, who’s African-American and Caucasian, apparently took a photo of this receipt which read “We don’t tip terrorist” and posted it online. And within hours, his post got a lot of traction on social media and the story was covered by USA Today, CBS and The Washington Post. As the restaurant’s owner had to take a stand, he chose to ban the customer by stating that racism is unacceptable in any form.

The incident occurred about a week ago and everybody outraged and a rash action was taken almost immediately. However, a week later, it turns out that the very reason for doing all that was false. Terry Turney, the COO of Saltgrass steakhouses said,

“After further investigation, we have learned that our employee fabricated the entire story. Racism of any form is intolerable, and we will always act swiftly should it occur in any of our establishments. Falsely accusing someone of racism is equaling disturbing.”

That’s right. None of it was true, Cavil had his five minutes of fame, people outraged for nothing and called an innocent customer a racist. However, thankfully, Cavil was fired for his false claims and the customer was invited back to the restaurant. And that’s not all. While Cavil was busy deleting his false Facebook profile, the customer got to have some of the best steak in Texas for free!

Additionally, Cavil has released a statement stating his mistake and promising to return the money people had donated after seeing that post. He said,

“I don’t have an explanation. I made a mistake. There is no excuse for what I did. I’m sorry. I deeply made a huge, big mistake. And I’m in the process of getting the help that I need.”

So, what can you learn from this little incident? First and foremost, don’t implicate innocent people because the truth will always come out. Racism is undoubtedly bad but don’t use it as a tool to gain internet fame. And secondly, don’t outrage from your computer before knowing the entire story.
