100 Telangana Teachers Offer Migrants Food & Footwear On The Highway Amid Lockdown

With no money to sustain themselves and no public transport due to the lockdown, migrant workers have taken it upon themselves to walk to their hometowns. Hundreds have been spotted treading the highway roads, some even going without food or water.

To help such people, 100 teachers from Telangana have joined hands to provide the migrant workers and their families with food. They are stationed at the Perkit junction near Nizamabad on National Highway 44, reports TOI.

Education Officer Battu Rajeswar, who is leading the team, said:

“We started with an aim to distribute food to about 700 migrants each day. But now the number has raised to 3,000. We have employed cooks and have been spending nearly Rs 20,000 per day from the teachers’ contribution.”

The team has also been distributing footwear to the migrants as many of them walk barefoot on the road. However, they are now falling short of resources. Nearly 2,000 migrants had to go back hungry after the teachers ran out of food packets.

Kudos to all the teachers for their kind initiative. We hope more people contribute to this noble cause so that no migrant worker goes back hungry.
