As #Surrogacy trended on Twitter, author and activist Taslima Nasreen shared her take on surrogacy which started a huge controversy online.

“How do those mothers feel when they get their readymade babies through surrogacy? Do they have the same feelings for the babies like the mothers who give birth to the babies?” she tweeted.

She further went on to claim:

“Surrogacy is possible because there are poor women. Rich people always want the existence of poverty in the society for their own interests. If you badly need to raise a child, adopt a homeless one. Children must inherit your traits – it is just a selfish narcissistic ego.”

She went on to face massive backlash for her tweets. Many called her take on surrogacy “insensitive” and her argument flawed. Some questioned how fathers have the “same feeling for babies” when it is the mother who bears the child. Others stressed on the matter of choice for a woman to do what she will with her body.

As there were many who condemned Taslima Nasreen for taking a dig at Priyanka and Nick, the author later clarified that her tweets weren’t an opinion on the couple’s announcement.

A man or a woman can be infertile. A woman’s body may not be capable enough to carry a baby. A woman’s age may not allow her to conceive. A woman may not want to carry a child in the first place. A woman might want to become a surrogate and carry a child for someone else. More than anything else, we need to accept the concept of personal choice and consider that things might not go according to plan for many couples.
