Tarun Tahiliani Slammed For Designing ‘Boring’, ‘Tacky’ Olympic Uniforms For Indian Athletes

If we were to think about some of the top designers who are responsible for promoting Indian fashion globally and putting Indian textiles and designs on the map, designer Tarun Tahiliani would definitely be in the top five. The man has proved time and again that he has an exquisite taste when it comes to fashion, mixing traditional with modern elements. His most recent work, which has gained immense applause, was the outfits he designed for multiple celebrities who attended Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding, including Kim Kardashian.

Hence, when the Olympic ceremonial uniforms for the Indian athletes were unveiled, everyone sat back and sighed in disappointment.

For the male athletes, Tarun Tahiliani had designed a white kurta and a Bundi jacket adorned with orange and green naksi work, celebrating the tricolour. The jackets featured pockets with ‘India’ inscriptions and the Olympic logo.

On the other hand, for the female athletes he had designed Ikat-inspired sarees in the tri-colours of white, orange, and green, complemented by orange and green borders and blouses.

The men’s kurta set was made from lightweight moss cotton, while the women’s sari was viscose crepe.

The uniforms are being called “boring”, an “afterthought”, a “disappointing affair”, “tacky” and fit for “a school Independence Day programme”. This was a great opportunity to showcase and promote Indian textiles and designs on a global platform and Tarun Tahiliani clearly didn’t live up to people’s expectations.

Several people took to social media to criticize the designer for treating Indian athletes like an afterthought and putting all his efforts into dressing Bollywood celebrities instead. They have been urging the government to hand over opportunities like this to local craftsmen, who are far more capable of delivering a better job, instead of luxury designers.

This is such a waste of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
