Tamil Nadu Governor Passes Ordinance To Ban Online Gaming, ₹5K Fine & Jail For Gamers

There have been several instances in the past wherein kids have stolen a lumpsum from their parents to purchase online games. Some have even committed suicide after losing money to online gaming.

To prevent such incidents, Tamil Nadu Governor, Banwarilal Purohit, has suggested banning online gaming, reports The Indian Express. According to the ordinance, people found gaming online will be punished with a fine of Rs 5,000 and 6-month imprisonment. People hosting gaming houses will be slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000 and 2-year imprisonment.

The electronic transfer of funds used for betting and distributing prize money is also suggested to be banned.

“Due to online gaming, innocent people mainly youngsters are being cheated and some people have committed suicide. In order to avoid such incidents of suicide and protect innocent people from the evils of online gaming, the Government has submitted a proposal to the Hon’ble Governor to promulgate an ordinance,” the Raj Bhavan release read, reports TOI.
