15 YO Jerlin From Tamil Nadu Just Won Gold At The World Deaf Youth Badminton Championship!

Women athletes like Dhuti Chand, Hima Das among others are making our country proud worldwide. Our chests swell with pride when they bring home medals for India.

Now 15-year-old Jerlin Anika from Tamil Nadu has done us proud by winning a gold medal at the World Deaf Youth Badminton Championship. The tournament was held in Taipei from July 17 to July 22 reports TOI.

Anika, a class 10 student from a government school in Mudrai and she won four medals in the tournament. The girl, who was interested in playing Badminton from an early age has won one bronze, two silver, and a gold in the championship.

“I felt very happy when she got the gold medal. It is not only for her but for the country and Tamil Nadu, I cried when I saw India’s flag being unfurled at the medals ceremony. Now, I urge the government to come forward and help this young sportsperson,” Anika’s mother said.

Anika’s father, Jeya Ratchagan, said that his daughter’s performance is a matter of pride for the country and the state of Tamil Nadu.

“In recently held competition in Taipei, she has won a gold medal. This medal is for India. It is a matter of pride for Tamil Nadu. The main reason behind her success is the support extended by her school and the efforts put in by her coach Saravana,” he said.

“She started learning badminton from the age of eight years,” he added.

This isn’t the first time that Anika has won a medal for India. She had also won two silver medals and a bronze in the 5th Asia pacific deaf badminton championship earlier.
